We like to think of Co-Pilot as the Netflix or Disney+ of the road safety world. The idea that organisations that want to reduce road risk pay a small amount of money each year to access a vast library of high-quality content, which is constantly growing and refreshing. And like these popular streaming platforms, Co-Pilot believes that accessibility is more important than ownership. We're as nostalgic as anyone about the good old days of buying our own CDs and DVDs from Woolworths, but it's hard to argue that being able to watch or listen to pretty much anything we like for less than the cost of one compact disc per month isn't value for money.

This model works particularly well when you need access to a wide variety of content. Let’s face it - every road user is different, so you might need hundreds, if not thousands, of knowledge, skill, and attitude nudges to achieve effective, widespread, sustained behaviour change. If we take the macro goal of 'reducing driver distraction', for example, then a relevant nudge would be to encourage drivers to setup 'driving focus mode' on their phones. This would be just one of dozens of nudges that contribute towards the macro goal of fewer distracted road users.

In short, co-pilot is:

  • a shared library of road safety education and training

  • created by experts in behaviour change science and nudge theory

  • deployment-ready across multiple platforms

  • for generic or targeted engagement

  • designed to improve knowledge, skill, attitude and perceived control

  • fully customisable with co-branding and messages

Introducing co-pilot

WHAT PROBLEMS DOES CO-PILOT SOLVE?

Over the past two decades, there has been an explosion in the availability of road safety data. Better reporting systems and technological advancements have made it easier to spot and respond to trends early. Telemetry data gives fleet managers and insurance companies incredibly accurate data about driving styles and potential risks, such as excessive speeding or regular harsh braking. AI is even helping produce DNA-level driver profiles that give clues about where and when to deploy education, incentives and penalties.

I think we can all agree, the one thing we're not short of now is data. Often, it's easy to talk about data as if it's education. Take, for example, the traffic light style dashboards used by fleets and insurance companies. That's like a math teacher writing test scores up on the board, dropping the chalk and walking out of the room. Holding up a mirror can show us what's wrong but fixing the problems by changing behaviours is a much more complicated task.

Traditionally the solution has been for every organisation to address these issues using their own resources - either those they create themselves or those they commission. At Co-Pilot, we believe there is minimal benefit to owning road safety content outright. In fact, there are plenty of reasons to share a toolbox. Here are just a few:

  • commissioning high-quality content takes a lot of time

  • producing in-house content requires experience, equipment and expertise

  • maintaining the accuracy of content is a big task in itself

  • targeted education means you need lots of content

  • designing and building bespoke content is expensive

Despite having some of the safest roads in the world, the number of people killed or seriously injured on the UK's roads each year is shocking. Some well-intentioned campaigners believe that broad-brush campaigns like the TV adverts of yesteryear are the solution. In reality, the issues are more nuanced, and the ways in which people consume information has changed significantly in recent years.

Co-Pilot recognises this shift by creating a goal-centred toolbox full of tools that nudge road users towards better attitudes, safer behaviours and higher levels of skill. We wish it were as easy as creating a pithy advert and circulating it as widely as possible. But the reality is major behaviour change often requires lots of little steps.

WHERE DID THE IDEA FOR CO-PILOT COME FROM?

Co-Pilot's Founder, James Evans, has spent the past 20 years creating award-winning road safety content, including the magazines the DVSA hands every new driver with their driving test results and the UK's first road safety virtual reality film. His experience found that the novelty and prestige of producing high-quality, unique content often came at the cost of variety. Initially, he set about helping road safety professionals collaborate and share virtual reality content by establishing the Immersive Community Education (ICE) Hub. The success of this network fuelled his passion for the sharing model and ultimately led to the creation of Co-Pilot.

Simon Rewell, Co-Pilot’s COO, spent over a decade in the young driver telematics insurance industry, right from its very inception. He has seen first-hand the measurable difference that targeted nudges can make to collision rates and is passionate about helping more organisations adopt this concept. Having known each other for many years through mutual interest in young driver road safety, James and Simon bumped into each other by chance in a seaside town. They got talking and after a good lunch, decided to do the only sensible thing – create Co-Pilot.

Serendipitous encounter aside, perhaps real impetus for Co-Pilot comes from the challenge of achieving Vision Zero and the obvious need to take massive action. The Safe Systems approach, which we prefer to call 'layers of protection', gives us a framework for this action, and Co-Pilot is committed to providing momentum and leadership towards this goal.

WHAT NEXT?

We’re inviting early adopters to join us before the end of April 2023, at which point we’ll begin an eight-month intense programme of content design and creation. Co-Pilot will be closed to new members until 1st January 2024, so we can focus on working closely with the early adopter group to produce the first tranche of content around their needs. For anyone who joins before the end of April, their membership will run until the end of 2024. Please get in touch with us if you would like to:

  • join the early adopters

  • influence the toolbox content

  • with first mover advantage

  • at an introductory cost
