Autism & Neurodiversity resource
Understanding autism and neurodiversity is essential for delivering inclusive, high-quality road safety education. This expert-led MasterClass provides road safety professionals with clear, practical advice to help shape sessions and resources that are accessible, effective, and aligned with legal obligations under the Equality Act.
Created for the road safety community
Developed by Co-Pilot in partnership with the National Autistic Society, this 60-minute video resource introduces the key areas of difference experienced by autistic people - including sensory processing, social communication, executive functioning and the need for certainty - and explores how these differences can affect engagement with road safety sessions and materials.
The resource has been designed specifically for use by local authorities, blue light teams, road safety practitioners and educators. Whether you’re creating new resources, delivering school sessions, or designing services for the public, this MasterClass offers essential learning to support more inclusive, legally sound practice.
What’s included
24 expert-led videos (approx 60 minutes in total): Organised into short, digestible chapters covering key areas of difference, including real-world examples
Accompanying written guidance: Easy-to-reference content to help shape inclusive practice and decision-making
Practical strategies: Support for adapting both face-to-face delivery and printed/digital resources
Sector-specific framing: Advice tailored to road safety contexts and use cases, including education, enforcement, infrastructure and communications
Supporting legal compliance and professional development
With over 700,000 autistic people in the UK - many without a formal diagnosis - road safety professionals are likely to work with autistic learners and service users at some point in their careers. Under the Equality Act 2010, organisations are legally required to anticipate and make reasonable adjustments to avoid disadvantaging disabled people.
This MasterClass helps teams feel confident they are meeting that obligation while improving the quality and accessibility of the services they offer. From better visual resources to more predictable session structures, the adjustments discussed often benefit all learners - not just autistic individuals.
How teams can use this resource
The resource is suitable for individual or team-based CPD and can be completed in one sitting or broken into short learning modules. Some local authorities are using it as part of new-starter onboarding or as a shared activity during team development days. It also pairs well with other CPD MasterClasses in the Vision Zero Community.
