HazardSmarter
Hazard perception training works for novices. Experienced drivers need something else: hazard prediction - reading the precursors before the hazard appears. Twenty evaluated clips from ESITU Solutions, with car, van and HGV versions.
What it is
Produced by ESITU Solutions, the Nottingham Trent University spin-out led by Professor David Crundall and Dr Victoria Kroll, each clip plays to a point, freezes and asks what is most likely to happen next. The replay with commentary shows what the cues were.
The clips include a testing element and a training element, and have been evaluated as effective across use cases from grey fleet to professional drivers, including blue light response.
Members use them in inductions, toolbox talks, e-learning and driver assessments. Motorcycle, cycle and tractor versions are in production.

Evaluated as effective
Hazard prediction tests developed by the ESITU team have been shown in peer-reviewed research to discriminate between safer and less safe experienced drivers, and training on them improves performance. The Toolbox clips were built on that research.
