Autism and neurodiversity

Understanding autism and neurodiversity is essential for inclusive road safety education - and a legal obligation under the Equality Act. This expert-led masterclass gives practitioners practical advice they can use next week.

What it is

Developed with the National Autistic Society, 24 short films (about an hour in total) introduce the key areas of difference - sensory processing, social communication, executive functioning, the need for certainty - and how they affect engagement with sessions and materials.

Written guidance accompanies each chapter, with strategies for face-to-face delivery and for printed and digital resources, framed for road safety contexts: education, enforcement, infrastructure and communications.

With over 700,000 autistic people in the UK, many undiagnosed, every road safety team will work with autistic learners. The adjustments discussed usually benefit all learners.
