Fit to Drive workbook

Young people are passing their test later, often after they have started work. Fit to Drive gives young employees and apprentices the language and permission to say when they are not fit to drive, and gives employers a clear way to meet their legal duty.

What it is

The workbook covers the three main fitness to drive risks - drink, drugs and fatigue - through reflection, rehearsed conversations and action plans. Two-way pledges put the responsibility on both employee and employer, and review pages at two and three years prompt a fresh look as the driver matures.

It works digitally or printed in A5, and fits apprenticeship inductions, fleet safety management, early employment onboarding and wellbeing programmes.

Employers have a duty under health and safety law to ensure those who drive for work are competent and fit. A completed workbook contributes to the audit trail that shows the risk has been addressed.

Planned with the behavioural science team

Like every Toolbox resource, Fit to Drive workbook started with an intervention plan from Dr Elizabeth Box, applying the COM-B model so that the format, the framing and the call to action are chosen for effect.
